With its white and red root, the radish is well known to all. This crunchy little vegetable is so well established in our culture that it is one of the first words we teach our little ones. Tender, fleshy, fresh and spicy at the same time, it knows how to take various shapes and colors. And in the radish, everything is good, from the root that you decorate with a touch of salt and that you crunch on a slice of buttered bread, with leaves that make delicious soups. Radishes will feel comfortable in cool soil made up of potting soil, compost or any soil rich in humus. The sowing method will be based on the variety chosen: under one to two centimeters of soil for medium-long to long varieties, and on the ground surface for round radishes. There are mainly two types of radish, the monthly radish and the winter radish, among which are the black radish, the Chinese pink radish and the Japanese white radish. All will surprise you with their specific taste, but also and above all with their size! When to sow? Everyday radishes are sown and harvested from March to September, and winter radishes in summer for a harvest from October to November. To keep a harvest as long as possible, know that it is possible to keep winter radishes all winter by burying them in the sand, as is done for carrots. This same characteristic is explained simply by the fact that both belong to the same family of root vegetables! Step 1: Draw a groove
If you want to find your way among the radishes and the weeds that will grow, it is better to opt immediately for sowing in furrows. If you do not have a line, use the handle of your rake and press it lightly with the foot so as to leave the imprint in the ground. This will give you a straight, shallow groove. Space your grooves 10 to 20 cm apart.

Step 2: Sow your seeds
The radish seeds are small, so it will not be easy to sow them regularly. However, be careful not to have a heavy hand. A few seeds are enough and it is better to repeat the operation every 15 days than to waste seed by sowing too much.
In the second step, when the radishes have germinated, you will need to thin out and keep only the most vigorous shoots.
Step 3: Cover the grooves
Your furrow is sown, it only remains to cover it with soil using the rake. Unlike the photo, it is easier for this step to use the back of the rake and push the soil that formed the lips of the furrow.
Continue pressing lightly to bring the seeds into contact with the ground.
Step 4: Water and keep the soil cool
Water regularly to encourage the emergence of seeds. In all cases, keep the soil cool and moist, preferably watering in the morning, a guarantee of rapid growth, but also to prevent the radishes from becoming hollow and spicy, which occurs when they lack water.
Another benefit of regular watering is to limit attacks by soil fleas (also known as flea beetles), which appear in periods of drought by devouring the leaves. Another way to fight against these little fleas (which fly more than they jump) is to plant lettuce or spinach between the rows or to spray out intruders.
Step 4: Thin the rows
A few days later, if the conditions are favorable, the first leaves emerge. It is at this time that it is necessary to thin the rows, by removing the most frail plants in order to favor the development of the others. Space your radishes 3 to 5 cm for the varieties of each month, and leave 20 cm between the winter radishes that consume more space.
